Starting with height: Cobsย range in sizeย starting from 11.2hh miniature cobs up to around 16 hands high, looking like a large pony with their small heads, short ears and large, intelligent eyes. Their legs are relatively short in relation to their bodies, which gives them that compact and sturdy.

Are they easy to ride:Cobs are often considered as the most suitable horses for beginners, but not all of them are fit for first-time horse owners. The Welsh Section D, for example, can be quite fiery and a sharp ride, and would not be classified as an ideal choice of mount for a less than capable or confident rider.
Are they 1 coat?: They can be Chestnut, bay, and black and white called paint coat witch mean when a horse has black and chestnut patches is called paint horse just as there are many paint horses in the world most of them get called appaloosas and paints!.
Can cobs do dressage: Across the countryย there are hundreds of cobs challenging more conventional dressage types and competing successfully at medium level and above, and even right up to grand prix. /or Jumping: Commonly assumed to be sedate and sensible, a fit cob can equally be forward going, fast, fiery and fun.ย They will take most disciplines in their stride and are often capable jumpers.
Do cobs like kids?:he Welsh cob is ideal for small adults as well as children and can be the perfect choice for you if you want a pony both you and your children can ride. Good-natured and hardy, this pony is as good hunting as it is driving.
What can they eat:If hard food does need to be given, it is often best to look forย non-heating pony mixesย (i.e. mixtures without oats) rather than using mixes intended for horses. However, it’s important to recognise that cobs like to be grazing all day, every day. Use their weight as a barometer for how much food they need.
What can they breed:
What sort of horse is a cob?
A cob is traditionally aย draft type pony. Typically of a stout build, with strong bones, large joints, and steady disposition, it is a body type of horse rather than a specific breed.
How long do they live for: Most horses live for around 25 to 30 years, but with the proper care and maintenance, Cobs have lived up toย 35-40 years! As your horse ages, keep an eye out for any health issues and address them as soon as you notice them to ensure your Cob has a long, happy life.
Why do they have fluffy feet?: Manyย horse breedsย have furry feet, and they come in all shapes and sizes. However, most horses with hairy feet are large draft breeds that evolved in cold climates, andย the hair provides an extra layer of warmth. The hair around a horse’s feet is called feathers and often needs special care.
Why do they have bad teeth?:
In horses,ย delayed eruption or impaction of cheek teeth (such as from overcrowding) is a common cause of bone inflammation and subsequent tooth decay. Permanent teeth can also erupt in an abnormal location due to overcrowding.ย ย
Why do some cobs not jump: Cobsย tend to trunddle around on the forehand which makes getting their front end off the ground enough to jump difficult for them. You need to practise canter until it’s easy and up-hill – if he can’t canter well he shouldn’t be jumping.
why do some horses not get rode?: Cobsย are often considered as the most suitable horses for beginners, but not all of them are fit for first-time horse owners.ย The Welsh Section D, for example, can be quite fiery and a sharp ride, and would not be classified as an ideal choice of mount for a less than capable or confident rider.
what makes a good cob: The standard calls forย a short legged animal with bone and substance, capable of carrying a substantial weight. The temperament is โwell manneredโ and these cobs should be suitable for nervous riders, while having the physical attributes of a good hunter, having a low movement and providing a comfortable ride.
Are cobs good first horses?: Cobs are commonly used for the purpose of providing someone with a first horse, especially children. This is due to the fact that they are typically very calm in terms of temperament as well as being smaller than many other types of horses.
what age does cobs stop growing:Their compact size and sturdy build makes them incredibly strong animals, capable of carrying and pulling a great deal more weight than a light horse of similar height. Like many of the larger draught breeds they are slow developers and do not stop growing untilย 5-7 years of age.
what to look for when buying a cob: The cob should beย well-mannered and ideal for nervous or elderly riders. Cobs should have sensible heads, (sometimes Roman nosed), a full, generous eye, shapely neck, well-muscledโฆ and with a well-defined wither.โ
How do you know a cob trusts you: Nudges and gentle groomingย are sure signs your horse trusts you and wants to spend time with you. Engagement can also happen during training sessions. If your horse is looking at you, tips his ears toward you, or moves his head in your direction, they are trying to see what you are doing and learn about the situation.
How to tell your horse your friendly: Show him you are his new best friend by giving him a nice scratch. They aren’t the kind of animals who much enjoy soft strokes; this probably tickles them more than anything. A good scratch on the horse’s neck will make him very happy.
I chose to wright about cobs because I have always wanted one but every riding school I go to doesn’t have one because not a lot of them are in Christchurch/ New Zealand.
Have you ever seen a cob or ridden one?
